The Trieste International Foundation for the Progress and Freedom of Sciences (FIT) seeks to promote the dissemination of scientific and technological knowledge for peaceful applications. It facilitates cooperation between university and research institutions in Trieste and international scientific organizations both in the developed and developing world.

In 1990, the foundation instituted the Primo Rovis International Award, which is given annually in recognition of significant international contributions to scientific and technological communication.
